    Join WASRG on Tuesday, May 19 at 10:00am ET for our next Inside the Dome virtual event, with Steve Byrne of Tremont Strategies and special guest State Rep. Mark Cusack, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. 

    With decades of combined experience in Massachusetts government and public policy, Steve and Representative Cusack will offer WASRG members an insider’s look at the legislative session and the political dynamics shaping Beacon Hill.

    Drawing on their longstanding professional relationship and deep expertise, the discussion will focus on the Commonwealth’s evolving energy policy landscape and the growing issue of energy affordability. Representative Cusack will provide insight into the House’s recently passed omnibus energy bill, now pending in the Senate, as well as the broader political and regulatory dynamics impacting businesses and policymakers across Massachusetts.

    ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

    Steve Byrne, Vice President at Boston-based Tremont Strategies Group, brings extensive experience in state and local government, with a proven track record in legislative strategy, public policy, and community leadership.

    Steve began his public service career in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving as the first legislative aide and later Chief of Staff to Telecommunications, Energy and Utilities Chairman Mark J. Cusack, who will be joining him for this discussion.

    In those roles, Steve helped shape legislative and budget priorities focused on emerging technology, energy, health care, insurance, and transportation, and contributed to the development of the House Committee on Technology and Intergovernmental Affairs.

    Representative Mark J. Cusack represents the 5th Norfolk House District, consisting of the Town of Braintree and Precincts 1 and 2 in the Town of Holbrook. Mark is currently serving his sixth term in the House of Representatives. He is a lifelong resident of Braintree, Massachusetts, and a graduate of UMass Amherst.

    Prior to joining the House, Mark served as Assistant to the Mayor of Braintree, playing a pivotal role in implementing Braintree’s new government structure as it transitioned from a selectmen-town meeting form to a mayor-town council form. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and has since served on numerous committees, including Elder Affairs, Municipalities and Regional Government, Health Care Financing, and Transportation. He currently serves as Chair of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy.

    Join WASRG on June 25 for our next Inside the Dome virtual event featuring Nina Fisher of Serlin Haley and special guest Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry for a post-primary update on the political dynamics shaping Maine and what they could signal nationally.

    With Maine drawing national attention ahead of the 2026 elections, the discussion will explore the state’s evolving political landscape, the impact of the primaries, and key policy debates dominating the legislative session — including affordability, energy costs, housing, education funding, and the state budget. President Daughtry will offer insights from the Senate Democratic leadership perspective as lawmakers navigate some of the session’s most closely watched issues.

    About our Speakers

    Nina Fisher’s State House career spans both the private and public sector, and executive and legislative branches of government. Most recently, Nina served as the Deputy Commissioner for the Maine Department of Transportation, a position she held for five years. She began her career at MaineDOT as the Director of Legislative and Constituent Services under two prior administrations. She has also worked as Director of Government Relations for the Maine Community College System, and as Legislative Aide in the Maine State Senate. Nina is a native Mainer, having grown up in Madawaska the most northern town in state, located on the Canadian border.

    Senator Mattie Daughtry is the President of the Maine Senate. A lifelong Brunswick resident, graduate of Brunswick High School and Smith College, she co-owns and brews at Moderation Brewing Company. During her time in the Legislature, Sen. Daughtry has authored and passed nationally-recognized bills to reduce student debt, create Maine’s paid family and medical leave law, and grow education funding. Throughout her time in office, she has been proud to support environmental progress in Maine.
